Tamara Waterston, Sun Country received airfare, hotel accommodations, and a stipend from Sun Country Airlines as compensation for the post, and Sun Country Airlines did not influence my opinion of this experience. You will not go hungry and you shouldn’t! General stores line the roads with grab-and-go picnics or lunches filled with loads of fresh sandwiches built to order, and house-made pickles and chips. We stopped along the way for lunch at casual spots. Spacing them out so you can take a chance to enjoy and soak up the surroundings at each is going to make for a much more enjoyable stay. I have a feeling they could easily turn even the most disapproving wine drinker into an aficionado.ĭepending on the amount of time you will be spending in this part of wine country, I would suggest two to four maximum wineries each day. When speaking of wine, people in this part of wine country make it infectious. I love how casual the owners and winemakers make the experience feel, and even at a novice level, you are welcome. We even sipped wine out of a barrel! Since we were traveling through Sonoma at the peak harvest time, the air was electric and it was contagious! We had a tasting lesson, learned about the AVAs, the Russian River, and discovered we love Merlot (a lot). Our time spent at Lambert Bridge was extremely informative. I was most excited to experience this with my husband, as he has never visited this part of California. Tastings at each of the vineyards is a unique experience. My top vineyards based on taste and overall experience are: Lambert Bridge, best overall wines Ledson, you taste inside a castle! Ram’s Gate Winery, cozy and inviting atmosphere with fireplaces and Matanzas Creek Winery offered a laid-back atmosphere with lavender fields. Much of this part of wine country is undiscovered and offers a more authentic, less commercialized experience to visitors. Unique to the region are over 17 AVAs (American Viticulture Areas), each with its unique characteristics. Sonoma has twice the land, covering over 1,700 square miles, with 60,000 acres of vineyards and over 425 wineries. Since I am more of a Sonoma girl, I am going to stick to that.Īccording to the locals, Sonoma County is what Napa used to be 30 years ago. There are dividing opinions on which location is right for you, Napa vs. Talking with friends about their experiences and reaching out to my wine connoisseurs was the best advice I could have received, even better than Google or TripAdvisor could offer! Most likely you will have a friend, co-worker, or family member who has made it through wine country before. When it comes to navigating the hundreds of vineyards in Santa Rosa/Sonoma County, it can feel overwhelming! Where do you even begin? I took to Google to start researching some of the wine reviews and then I started asking around. We encourage you to continue to visit and support the beautiful California green. Beyond the burnt hills, the same beautiful countryside beckons you upon arrival. We’re supporting their efforts in renewing positivity and bringing new energy into the destination. The towns are open for business per usual and fresh green grass is already growing. We’re standing with Santa Rosa/Sonoma County in their effort to bring travelers into their city after the tragic fires spread through a few weeks ago.
